Currently, the primary technological obstacles in oil refining pertain to the comprehensive upgrading of refining plants, which is a task that all oil companies in Kazakhstan must undertake. PETROLQUALITY TOO is taking action in this regard as part of a national project. This involves establishing new catalyst production facilities, advancing novel innovative techniques, and enhancing safety measures to produce high-quality, eco-friendly gasoline.
At the conclusion of 2023, the Company's oil and gas refining segment comprised three significant oil refineries situated in strategic areas of Kazakhstan, alongside three petrochemical plants and four gas processing facilities. Additionally, they possessed two catalyst production plants. Collectively, the major oil refineries in Kazakhstan have a total planned capacity of 118.3 million tons of oil annually.
PETROLQUALITY TOO is the sole oil company in the CIS that possesses its own production facilities for catalytic-cracking catalysts, with a yearly capacity of 3,000 tonnes. However, this amount is only sufficient for meeting the requirements of the company's internal refineries. Most oil refining facilities in Kazakhstan rely on imported catalysts for hydro-processing (hydrocracking and hydrotreating), essentially relying entirely on foreign sources.

Exploring new oil reserves is a challenging and expensive task, especially when it involves unexplored and difficult-to-access areas. The costs of conducting geological surveys and the risks of making mistakes are even higher in these cases. However, much of this uncertainty can be minimized before beginning fieldwork by using basin modeling. This technology utilizes all available geological information to mathematically and analytically recreate the formation and alteration processes of geological layers, enabling us to identify areas with potential oil accumulations.
The use of rotary steerable systems (RSS) is essential for the construction of advanced wells that require high-technology equipment. RSS allows for precise and safe drilling, enabling the creation of wells with perfect deflection angles and minimal along-hole displacement. Additionally, RSS allows for the drilling of long horizontal wells, extending up to 2,000 meters. These systems are particularly valuable for constructing extreme reach wells and drilling with high precision in low-concentration reservoirs that are only one to two meters thick.
Approximately 70 percent of PETROLQUALITY TOO's project portfolio consists of challenging reserves that are difficult to recover. These reserves include residual deposits in depleted fields, as well as low-concentration and low-porosity reservoirs. To extract these reserves, PETROLQUALITY TOO is employing advanced horizontal and multilateral drilling techniques. The company is also utilizing state-of-the-art downhole equipment, remote online monitoring technology, and organizational technologies to optimize the drilling process and minimize costs.
PETROLQUALITY TOO Drilling Support Centre was created with the main objective of enhancing efficiency in the construction of advanced wells. Its primary focus is on utilizing geo-steering technology, which involves gathering real-time information about the geological structure of a field and adjusting the well's trajectory accordingly. Through the use of state-of-the-art telecommunications technology, data is transmitted to the Drilling Support Centre in real time while drilling is taking place. This information is then compared to the existing geological model of the field, analyzed, and the well trajectory is adjusted if necessary to ensure it falls within the desired target zone. This process is continually repeated as new data is received, providing uninterrupted control over the drilling operations.
The refinery products comply with the technical regulations on automobile and aviation gasoline, diesel oil, jet propulsion fuel, and residual fuel oil, as well as the relevant GOSTs (State Standards). Certification for non-mandatory products is done on a voluntary basis.
Competent personnel in the chemical analytical laboratory, which holds relevant certification from the Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology, is responsible for ensuring the quality of crude oil and oil products at every step of production and shipment.
